"I am campaigning hard with a crackerjack committee and too numerous to name
volunteers. I take no opposition for granted - especially now that
not-so-veiled racism has raised its ugly head.
The city of st. paul will never emulate (to our knowledge) anything coming
out of the free nation of texas, home of george bush where the village idiot
is still gone missing. Don't look for any local laws encouraging the
baiting of any ethnic minorities. Our police and city staff have enough to
do without becoming the local INS.
On a serious note, St. Paul's adopted policy is that we ask national
identification only when a person is charged with a serious crime. Not at
routine traffic stops, not at calls for service at work or home. We want
every resident of St. Paul to feel free to call the police for help -
unafraid that they will be deported. We are still not living in a country
where an anonymous official can "demand to see your papers" like in a black
and white movie about the eastern bloc.
